![]() ![]() Most of Cathy's plot points and personality traits in the script were merged with Lydia. ![]() She also has a 9-year-old sister named Cathy who would be the one to befriend the Maitlands. In an early script, Lydia was originally a minor character and a typical teenage angsty goth.By the end of the film, she is more happy and well-adjusted because Adam Maitland and Barbara Maitland become active parental figures alongside Charles Deetz and Delia Deetz, who take a stronger role in her upbringing after having seen her nearly forced into marriage with Betelgeuse. She also has a certain flair for the dramatic, particularly when talking about herself. Though in her dark personality she has a great dark sense of humor to her. Despite her young age, Lydia appears to be the most sensible member of the Deetz household. Lydia loves writing poetry, taking photographs, and loves anything pertaining to the supernatural and paranormal. Her father and stepmother do not take anything she says seriously and often ignore her for their own selfish pursuits. Lydia is a serious but kind girl who is sensitive beyond her Goth dress and feels isolated in the world. During the wedding scene, she’s seen wearing a poofy red, rose-themed dress and looks disgusted at the fact that she’s marrying Betelgeuse. In the movie Lydia has medium-length black hair with pointed bangs and always has her hair in a half-ponytail. When the Maitlands tried to scare Delia and then were leaving her room, Lydia photographed them in the hall, then realizing they were the ghosts, and formally introduced themselves. Lydia Deetz is from New York City and moved with her family to Winter River, Connecticut. She herself defining herself as strange and unusual, and quickly sighted the Maitlands in the attic window on moving day. ![]()

A mere 35% of the adult population reading Goethe and Pushkin was deemed insufficient: in East Germany, that number was to rise to 90%, and ideally within five years. In the 1970s, the East German government had warned that the relatively small number of readers of schöne literatur, or high literature, represented a “key problem” for the socialist country. In theory, there is nothing surprising about the East German politburo declaring a matter of statecraft the vaguest of all literary disciplines, what Edmund Burke once called the “art of substantiating shadows, and of lending existence to nothing”. I know that now, after thinking about it for a long time. Outside the cafe, before we waved our goodbyes, Polinske said something that I couldn’t quite make sense of at the time: “The question mark at the end of a poem is worth a hundred times more than a full stop. He had instilled the group with a dogma: poetry had to rouse emotion and boost the hunger for victory in class warfare. If I really wanted to understand why the Stasi had set up the circle and how they planned to use it, Polinske said, I should try to contact the circle’s former artistic leader, a thin man with thick glasses called Uwe Berger. He, too, had stopped attending after a few months. Many of the young soldiers who turned up to the Working Circle of Writing Chekists had left with tears in their eyes after being informed of the poor quality of their work. The reason he had joined the Stasi poetry circle was simple: “I had artistic ambitions, and I thought I could learn something from the real poets who ran the workshop.” His own poems were technically accomplished, but could verge on the whimsical, and didn’t always earn praise. Was the idea to help East Germany’s working-class warriors better understand the decadent bourgeois mind? Polinske shook his head. What had the Stasi tried to achieve with its poetry programme, I asked Polinske over a currywurst with potato salad. We met at a restaurant under the railway arches in Berlin’s Mitte district, just down the road from Friedrichstrasse station where he used to wave people across the iron curtain. He was happy to meet up, he wrote in an email, but “how much time we will need will depend on your questions”. The first Writing Chekist to reply was Jürgen Polinske, a former border guard who now worked as an archivist at Berlin’s Humboldt University. How had a secret police synonymous with the suppression of free thought ended up writing poetry? Over the coming months I tried to track down former members of the circles, and contacted them to see if they could tell me more. The slim paperback, its title Wir Über Uns (“We about us”) falling down the front page in curling calligraphic letters, felt like something out of a Monty Python sketch, or a spin-off from the film The Lives of Others. I got hold of a copy of one shortly before I moved to Berlin in 2016. The group, which internal memos referred to as the Working Circle of Writing Chekists (a reference to the fearsome Bolshevist secret police, the Cheka), produced two anthologies over this seven-year period. They set out to learn about iambic pentameter, cross-rhyming schemes and Petrarchan sonnets. ![]() They met in a first-floor room adorned with portraits of East German leader Erich Honecker and Vladimir Ilyich Lenin that was closed with a security seal overnight.īut the Stasi men did not gather to gameplan nuclear war scenarios, work up disinformation campaigns or fine-tune infiltration techniques. At the height of the tense second phase of the cold war, a group of Stasi majors, propaganda officers and border guards convened at a heavily fortified compound in socialist east Berlin. ![]() ![]() ![]() # such as the number of concurrent requests. # The directives in this section affect the overall operation of Apache, put your virtual host configuration (*.conf) here files that are created from /etc/sysconfig/apache2 PEM-encoded X.509 Certificate Signing Requests PEM-encoded X.509 Certificate Revocation Lists (CRL) (example) conf that comes with apache2-mod_php4 are created from sysconfig upon server restart: instead of# these files, you edit /etc/sysconfig/apache2 for each virtual host, place one file here # | into APACHE_INCLUDE_* in /etc/sysconfig/apache2) your include files # | (for each file to be included here, put its name enable UserDir (if mod_userdir is loaded) set up the default server that replies to non-virtual-host requests SSL conf that applies to default server _and all_ virtual hosts defaults for displaying of server-generated directory listings restrict access to mod_status (server monitoring) server-wide general settings# |- mod_nf. sizing of the server (how many processes to start. # Overview of include files, chronologically: ![]() # statements and global settings that can/should be overridden in the # If possible, avoid changes to this file. This makes Grim Fandango feel much more cinematic, but the lack of any on-screen prompts or tutorial will confuse the crap out of new players as they try to figure out how to make Manny interact with the world. Like the original release, there's no user interface to speak of. Unfortunately, the added control options are the only modern concessions made to bring Grim Fandango to a new generation of players. While maneuvering around the underworld never feels completely natural, having a variety of options at your fingertips certainly helps. I found myself opting for the modern controller input, and tapping the Vita screen whenever Manny obstinately decided he didn't want to look at the important thing he needed to progress. In addition to the tank controls from the original release (where you rotate and walk in the same manner as the first few Resident Evils), you also get a more conventional directional input on controllers, as well as point-and-click input on PC and touch input on Vita. ![]() I only wish Double Fine included the Remastered making-of documentary videos (which are freely available on YouTube) to complete the package.ĭespite the seeming lack of actual, y'know, remastering done to this remastered edition, the new features Double Fine added are certainly welcome.
